Taipei Medical University Hospital: A Design Inspired by Transformation and Hope

Creating a Hospital Space that Reflects Rebirth and Migration

Inspired by the transformative journey of a butterfly, the Taipei Medical University Hospital, designed by Da Yen, embraces the concept of rebirth and migration. By integrating the graceful wings and flying posture of a butterfly into the spatial context of the hospital, this design aims to instill a sense of hope and blessing for patients and their families.

The design of Taipei Medical University Hospital stands out with its unique thematic colors and distinctive visual markers. The overall space is divided into three areas, each with its own theme color: green, orange, and blue. The main heightened lobby entrance is adorned with a vibrant green, symbolizing the central hub of the hospital. The second entrance, represented by an energetic orange, welcomes visitors with warmth and vitality. Lastly, the third entrance, designated for the Chinese medicine outpatient area, is characterized by a serene blue.

Building upon the existing structure of the hospital, Da Yen extended the curves in the shape of butterfly wings and seamlessly integrated them with the flow of the space. These curved elements not only serve as decorative features on the ceiling but also act as visual markers, guiding visitors through the hospital with ease.

Technological advancements were also incorporated into the design. The original glass railing on the heightened second floor was replaced with a metal grille, adding texture to the space and obscuring any chaotic visual sensations. The butterfly installation art hanging above the ceiling underwent a transformation as well, with the use of titanium-plated panels embedded with LED lights that change color in rotation. This change not only enhances the visual appeal but also ensures safety for all.

One of the notable features of the redesigned space is the seating in the lobby. Inspired by the concept of a tourist hotel, the traditional chairs were replaced with a continuous curved sequence of sofas. This design not only provides comfort for hospital visitors but also complements the streamlined spatial patterns.

The project, spanning over six weeks, presented unique challenges due to the hospital's 24-hour operations. The construction team had limited access to the site, working from Friday evening to Monday morning each week. Safety measures were carefully implemented to ensure minimal disruption to the hospital's operations.

Taipei Medical University Hospital's redesign project reflects the institution's commitment to smart healthcare and improving the service experience. By transforming the public spaces into welcoming and emotionally engaging environments, the hospital aims to provide a friendlier atmosphere for patients and their families.

This remarkable design by Da Yen has been recognized with the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This award acknowledges the design's outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. The Taipei Medical University Hospital stands as a testament to the positive impact that thoughtful and innovative design can have on the quality of life for patients and the community.
